Lesson on Mentoring:

As apostles of Christ we could have been a burden to you, but we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children. We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us. (1Thess 1:7-8)

Mothers are dearly loved. They are so loved because they care deeply for their children. They never fail to feed their children; tirelessly take care of their needs; sleep late and wake early to make sure their children are ready for the day. Mothers seldom complain about their little delights that they have to take care of.

It is no wonder the child feels safe, contented, satisfied, and always smiling because his mother is nearby. He knows that his needs will be gently met. He knows that he will be caringly protected – safe in the hands of his mother, who will risk all to prevent harm to all her children.

Mentoring according to Paul is like mothering. It starts with a heart of deep concern for the people we are mentoring. We are doing it not out of duty but out of love.

Do we care enough to nurture our mentee as a mother nurture her children? Do we make sure they are fully fed the Word of God consistently and regularly? Do we have fun and enjoy their company? Do we, like a mother, have dreams and plans to develop “our child” into a godly responsible adult who will be able to contribute back to our world?
